The stories behind the rooms...
The Complicity Room
The first room, named “the Complicity Room,” is designed as a master bedroom. It earns its name from a charming painting depicting a man and a woman who share a deep sense of complicity and joy. The room features a custom-made platform bed, perfectly fitted for the space, and a beautifully restored antique wardrobe.
A key feature of this room is the intimacy it offers, thanks to the curtains surrounding the bed. These curtains, made of light linen and cotton voile, manage transparency beautifully, creating a cozy atmosphere reminiscent of alcove beds in old houses. The curtains can be opened or closed as desired, allowing guests to adjust their level of privacy.
The Double Rooms
The second set of rooms, called “the Double Rooms,” consists of two rooms in a row. Each room is equipped with a custom-made platform bed with two double beds. These rooms also feature a beautifully integrated antique wardrobe.
Like the Complicity Room, the beds in the Double Rooms are surrounded by linen and cotton voile curtains. These curtains help create private and comfortable spaces, subtly managing transparency and intimacy.
Le Salon du Chineur
The lounge at Beim Mulles, known as “le salon du chineur,” is a generous space distinguished by its spectacular volume and unique light. This lounge plays on contrasts, featuring smooth black-tinted wooden walls against rough, mineral white walls, evoking the concept of yin and yang.
At the heart of this space, around a large and very comfortable sofa, you will find numerous objects collected from flea markets and antique shops. When we acquired this house, it was filled with a diverse array of items, creating a sense of disorder. Today, these same objects, carefully placed on pedestals and showcased, reveal their emotional and sculptural quality. The goal is to raise awareness among our guests of our passion for treasure hunting and antiques, while also highlighting the importance of caring for, cleaning, and displaying objects thoughtfully.
This space also features a steep, ladder-like staircase from the period, which has been tastefully restored and stabilized with great dedication. This staircase provides access to the garden and outdoor space, which we will define later.
The Kitchen
The kitchen at Beim Mulles has been designed by incorporating period elements transformed to subtly accommodate modern appliances, such as the oven. The kitchen furniture adopts a contemporary and minimalist style, consisting of two solid wood elements. The first is subtly tinted black, and the second is pigmented with a bright, sun-like yellow. This color palette evokes the contrast between the deep night and the radiant dawn.
The yellow used for the doors was made from corn pigments, creating a bright and sunny hue. This kitchen truly invites you to spend time in it, enjoying the harmony between past and present.
You will also find a table that is both rustic and contemporary, with a raw steel structure topped with a solid wood slab matching the kitchen countertop. Six high-quality chairs, reminiscent of castle seats with their noble appearance, complete the ensemble. They bring a touch of softness and comfort, elegantly contrasting with the table’s sturdiness.
The First Floor Hall
The first floor hall at Beim Mulles offers a nod to the grand entrance hall of the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. This carefully curated space features an eclectic selection of artworks, ranging from classic to contemporary, creating a “melting pot” of artistic expressions.
The walls are adorned with pieces that evoke the spirit of an art academy, blending historical and modern influences. This artistic mix aims to inspire and welcome guests into a setting that celebrates the beauty of art in all its forms. The atmosphere is designed to surprise and delight visitors, offering an unexpected yet charming homage to the grandeur and creativity of an academic art institution.
The House, Entrance Hall, and Access Staircase
As you step through the threshold of Beim Mulles, you are greeted by a beautifully restored period door. This door, rich with history, has been carefully preserved to maintain its authenticity and charm.
Upon passing through this door, you will discover the staircase area, a unique space we have named “Pepper and Salt.” This name reflects the distinctive walls: one, dark and intense like pepper, and the other, light and pure like salt. The walls have been treated with a traditional coarse-grain plaster, emphasizing this harmonious duality.
The ceiling, partially stripped back, reveals a palette of colors subtly preserved beneath an old layer of wallpaper. The shades of blue and yellow evoke the artistic compositions of the Belle Époque, bringing a celestial and luminous atmosphere.
The staircase itself, the centerpiece of this hall, is a true treasure of authenticity. Built from cut stone, it has been restored with great sensitivity to retain its original character. Each step reflects the history and soul of this house, inviting you to ascend with elegance and serenity.
The Garden
From the collector’s lounge, or “le salon du chineur,” a ladder-like staircase leads up to the garden, situated on a steep slope typical of the terrain in Vianden, below the Vianden Castle. Part of this slope has been transformed into a garden, featuring a small terrace with a round table and four metal chairs. These pieces are antiques, old metal garden chairs and tables.
From this small terrace, while seated at the table and chairs, you can enjoy a beautiful view of the old fortified elements of Vianden’s walls. Additionally, you are elevated above the rooftops, offering a stunning view over the roofs of the charming houses that make up Vianden. This enchanting setting invites relaxation and admiration of Vianden’s picturesque charm.
