The History of "Beim Mulles"

The History of "Beim Mulles"

The house known as “Mulles” was discovered by my partner, Mayke van Straalen. While exploring her new home country, Luxembourg, Mayke, a Dutch national, was on a trip to Vianden when she stumbled upon this house. At the time, it was more of a ruin, in very poor condition, abandoned in the center of Vianden, on the way up to the castle. She immediately fell in love with this modest, charming, and atypical little house. She introduced it to me, her associate Pascal Zimmer, and we visited it together with the seller. Very quickly, we decided to purchase it.

To be honest, the house was in very poor condition. Water was seeping in everywhere, it was falling apart, and it was completely cluttered. Nevertheless, we took on the challenge of emptying it, renovating it, restoring it, and bringing back its charm and character.

Regarding the renovation work we undertook, there are two key points to mention. Firstly, as part of the Zimmer Building Team, we have been renovating buildings with great sensitivity for 30 years. We aim to preserve the original character as much as possible, practicing a gentle restoration to maintain the authentic quality of the historic structure. This means not over-restoring to avoid losing the building’s charm and authenticity. This approach is crucial for creating warm, welcoming spaces where people feel instantly comfortable.

Our non-invasive, gentle renovation approach also has significant ecological benefits, greatly reducing the carbon footprint. It’s important to highlight that, today, we shouldn’t always resort to demolishing and rebuilding. Instead, by caring for and lovingly restoring existing structures, we can achieve magnificent results. This philosophy extends beyond architecture to a broader societal approach against consumerism.

Another special aspect of this house is its former owner, a rather emblematic and atypical figure in Vianden known as Mulles. Although I never had the chance to meet him personally, we were told that behind his rough and rustic exterior, he had a very good heart and a great sensitivity. Throughout the renovation, our team kept this in mind, aiming to respect and pay homage to Mulles. This sentiment is also why we chose to name our guesthouse after him.

Welcome! Pascal Zimmer
