A Wabi-Sabi experience ...comming soon...
Introduction to Wabi-Sabi Philosophy:
Wabi-Sabi is a Japanese philosophy that finds profound beauty in imperfection, transience, and the natural flow of life. It emphasizes simplicity, humility, and the authenticity of raw, unadorned materials. Wabi-Sabi encourages an appreciation for the incomplete, the impermanent, and the weathered, teaching us to see beauty in the flawed, the aged, and the understated. It’s about embracing the imperfect and finding elegance in the rustic and the natural processes of growth and decay.
Application of Wabi-Sabi in Guest House “Beim Mulles_ La Grange”:
At Guest House “Beim Mulles_ La Grange,” the principles of Wabi-Sabi are deeply embedded in every aspect of the design. The ancient stone walls of the building, left in their original, rustic state, have been carefully stabilized, preserving their raw, authentic character. This approach is in line with the concept of “rough luxe,” where luxury is defined by the honesty of materials and the patina of time, rather than by polished surfaces.
Spatial Design and Light Dynamics:
The spatiality of the guesthouse draws inspiration from the verticality of traditional barns, with a unique focus on the way light interacts with the space. The design features very few windows facing the street, with only two exceptions. Instead, natural light primarily enters through zenithal openings from above, creating a unique and atmospheric interplay of light and shadow throughout the day. This vertical light brings a serene, almost meditative quality to the space, reinforcing the connection to nature and the essence of Wabi-Sabi.
Architectural Composition:
Within this grand, vertical volume, surrounded by ancient, nearly medieval stone walls, we have introduced three distinct “slabs” or platforms. These slabs, crafted from exposed black concrete, are arranged in a seemingly random yet deliberate manner, each serving a distinct purpose: one forms the living area, another the kitchen and bathroom, and the third is dedicated to the bedroom and sleeping space. The black concrete, with its raw, unpolished finish, perfectly embodies the Wabi-Sabi aesthetic, emphasizing the inherent beauty of materials in their most natural and unrefined state.
Material Harmony and Atmosphere:
The guesthouse is characterized by a profound material uniformity, with natural stone and black concrete forming the core of the architectural palette. This choice of materials creates a striking contrast between the ancient and the modern, yet they harmonize beautifully, both being deeply rooted in the earth. The rugged texture of the natural stone harmonizes with the black concrete, which, while modern, is composed of natural elements like gravel and sand, tinted black to create a striking, cohesive look.
Conclusion:
The result is a space that evokes a sense of timelessness, where medieval meets modern, and the Wabi-Sabi philosophy permeates every corner. Guest House “Beim Mulles_ La Grange” is more than just a place to stay; it is an immersive experience, inviting guests to slow down, to appreciate the beauty in imperfection, and to find peace in the simplicity and authenticity of the materials. It offers a journey into the heart of Wabi-Sabi, where past and present coexist in a harmonious, meditative space.
